Call me mamshei
In this quarter’s issue of Insights, we decided to cast the spotlight on someone who has proven herself to be a valuable member of the InsBOSS Family. In the depths of life’s most challenging storms, she found the strength to rise above and embrace the power within. Her journey was marked by adversity and setbacks, but she never allowed those obstacles to define her; instead, she saw them as opportunities for growth and transformation.
Armed with an unyielding spirit and an unwavering belief in her abilities, she embarked on a remarkable quest to conquer her fears and turn her dreams into reality. Through sheer determination and resilience, she shattered the chains of limitation and soared towards her aspirations, proving that the human spirit is capable of defying any odds and scripting its own triumphant tale of success. Her story is a testament to
the indomitable power of the human will and serves as a guiding light for all those who dare to chase their dreams relentlessly. So let us take you on a journey with one of InsBOSS’ legends, a woman who exemplifies what it means to be an IBFM, and a powerhouse in the Sales department, Sheila “Mamshei” Paparon.
Sheila, or Mamshei as everyone lovingly refers to her, describes herself as very caring and motherly. “I always get that compliment from professional and personal sets of friends. That’s become my trademark even in the BPO industry. I easily get affected when I see someone struggling and I want that person to know that I’m here to help in any way I can.”
Mamshei has been with InsBOSS for more than five years. But let’s rewind time a little bit, and take a look at who she was before she was a member of the family. “I can say that my forte has always been in Sales but I started at JP Morgan Chase. So it was a financial account and I worked in customer service,” she said with a chuckle as she reminisced back to her early days in the BPO world. “Part of my work included upselling and that’s where I realized that I had potential. I could see that it was easier for me to connect with people and I focused on that. I realized that that was my calling and where I would shine. Over time, I figured out that I could have that connection with people on a personal level even if I’ve just met them for the first time. But prior to starting in InsBOSS, I wasn’t connected with any company. I was selling pre-loved clothes and I would model them! That was during the time when online selling was becoming a thing. Live selling wasn’t even a thing back then. So prior to InsBOSS, ‘bentador’ na talaga ako.”
When asked about how she ended up in InsBOSS, she explained that it was her brother-in-law, who was an IVAS at that time, who encouraged her to apply as the company was looking for someone who had a background in Sales. “It was Chris who initially interviewed me. I started April 30 or 31 2018 so it’s been five years and three months to this date. I could still remember when I applied, Chris was intimidating because he came off really strong but he was very handsome,” she said with a hearty laugh. “This was back in 12A7, the house that they were renting that served as the office. The first time I saw him, I was surprised by how handsome and young he was. It was also the first time that I would have a Filipino boss because I was used to working for expats in the BPO industry and usually it’s a team leader who interviews you, not the owner. I remember seeing Paul, Audrey, Choy, and Rufa and the first thing that came to my mind was ‘bakit ang konti lang namin?’, so I must admit I was hesitant at first, especially coming from a big BPO. There was that fear which I think is normal because you’re afraid of being unemployed. At that point I was looking for stability.”
She continued on about her experience when she applied for the sales role. “The interview lasted for two hours. Napiga ako ng bongga sa interview ni Chris. He wanted to know more about me and my experience. I got the job offer after several days. I was very happy because at that time, I was really struggling. My son and I were moving from one house to another, so I was really looking for a stable job. Joe was handling the Sales Department back then. I could never forget how he and I would do role plays everyday. We would also have mock sessions, and he would help me with my grammar. They taught me everything. Sobrang hands-on nung magkapatid. They were very meticulous with the role plays and mock sessions. It took me almost a year before I found my rhythm when it came to selling. There were no processes back then and it was just the few of us who were there. For months, I would shadow Joe. Whenever he had presentations, I would be there taking down notes and I paid close attention to how he sold our services until I eventually found my footing. So I started selling, and they were surprised that I was suddenly able to close sales. Everyday was a learning experience for me because I didn’t go through insurance training. Hindi ko na pinagdaanan yan, rekta ako sa pagbebenta. So I did everything I could to learn how to sell. I would constantly watch Joe’s videos and study how he did it. Slowly, we started to bring in more clients and I was able to close sales on my own but Chris and Joe were always there to guide me,” she smilingly said as she fondly looked back on her early days at InsBOSS.
She started talking about what the experience was like the past five years. “After 12A7, we moved to the office in Roces. That’s when we started hiring more VA’s. We also started having SMEs but there were not Team Leaders back then. I saw how things were starting to change and progress. I can still remember that back then, our target was 50 seats. That was a huge achievement for us because we also had competitors. When the pandemic hit in 2020, our clients started pulling out and back then we didn’t have the capacity to work from home yet. To retain the remaining clients we had, the company implemented a stay-in program. It wasn’t mandatory, so it was only for those who wanted to do it. That was a huge decision for us, especially me because I was the one who took care of everything. There were 19 of us back then, if I remember correctly. We took a risk because we believed in InsBOSS. The company had a vision and their intention was to help and improve the lives of everyone in the InsBOSS Family. Honestly, it was an honor for me because they trusted us. They trusted us to continue the business and our main goal at that time was to keep the company afloat.”
When asked about the experience during the stay-in period, Mamshei shared, “If could still remember, we were there for three months. There were a lot of lessons, a lot of struggles, but at the end of the day, it was fulfilling and satisfying. We were grateful because hindi kami pinabayaan ng company. Chris and Joe made sure everyone was getting paid, benefits and all. For those who didn’t join the stay-in, they were given half their 13th month pay and had the SSS benefit. So in all fairness, hindi nagpabaya ang company. Inisip parin nila yung kapakanan ng mga tao.”
While talking about her journey, Mamshei touched on the challenges she’s had to face in the past, “When things started getting back to normal, the Sales Team started growing. Eventually, the responsibility of Sales Lead was given to me. I started handling the Sales Team and back then there were three Account Executives. There were a lot of challenges that happened and there were many things that were new to me. I was still green when it came to the managing and reporting side. But eventually I was moved to the Senior Account Executive role.”
When asked how she felt and how it affected her, Mamshei responded with, “I’ll be honest, it hurt. It came to a point where I questioned myself. Was I not good enough? Did I not deserve it? Did I not give enough? But of course that was just my initial reaction. It’s normal to feel sad. I’ve been here for how many years and I’ve always been dedicated and committed to my work. But I am proud to say na hindi ako tumigil. I never stopped because I know that I can do more and that won’t stop me from reaching my goal. It’s not the end of the world. Experiences like that teach you a lot of lessons. It helped me reflect on myself and motivated me to learn more, to enhance my skills and get out of my comfort zone. Look for something new you can learn. I can say that until now, I’m still learning but I am progressing. Hindi ako tumitigil and so far, so good. I feel like I’m on the right track. Ang iniisip ko nalang ngayon, it will come when the time is right. All you have to do is keep improving yourself. Whatever challenges you face, let those be lessons to you.”
Mamshei also shared the kind of impact Chris and Joe had with her throughout her journey here in InsBOSS. “I admire how humble and down to earth they are. Back then when we still worked on-site, they knew everyone by name. They don’t want to be called Boss or Sir. Everyone has to be on a first name basis because they want to let you know or make you feel that we’re all equal. They never fail to say Good Morning or Good Night. I learned the mentality of gratefulness from them. That’s why I want to emulate them.”
When asked if that’s the reason why despite all the challenges she’s faced, she never left, she explained that it’s the culture and the owners that makes her choose to stay with InsBOSS. “I’ve had offers from our competitors, some with very generous packages, but it never crossed my mind to leave. First is because of the relationship I’ve built with InsBOSS and the family members. Everyone is humble and willing to help each other. You really feel like you’re part of the family, that you’re part of the growth of the company. Whatever struggles or challenges we had in the past, that’s just part of the journey. Second is because I know I am in the right company and with the right people. The company recognizes and rewards you for all the hard work that you do. The company has always stayed true to its promise. Financial freedom, check. The freedom to travel and enjoy but still work if you want to? Not everyone is given that privilege.”
” I know I am in the right company and with the right people. The company recognizes and rewards you for all the hard work that you do. The company has always stayed true to its promise.”
So what’s next for Mamshei Sheila? What does the future hold? “Well, nasa dugo ko na yung sales, yung pagbebenta. Of course I would like to be a manager, one of the managers of InsBOSS, in the future. It’s not just about the title, I genuinely want to help. I want to see others grow and improve. That’s why I always share my knowledge, my experience, and my journey here at InsBOSS to hopefully inspire others so they would know that nothing is impossible. I’m living proof of that at 43, I couldn’t imagine that I would be successful sa career na ito, in Sales. And I’m very thankful and grateful for that.”
When asked if there was anything she wanted to share with new IBFMs or member of the Sales Team, Mamshei had this to say. “This question is very timely because we have new AEs. They’re all eager and motivated. Ang dami nilang tanong. I see myself in them back then. Sobrang eager nilang makabenta, to make the same commissions I am making. Sobrang naging inspiration sa kanila yun. But I always tell them, if you have a goal, if you know that there’s more you can give, don’t stop. Keep improving.
Take it one step at a time, don’t rush things. It’s better to slowly master things over time, and before you know it, you’re already where you want to be. Don’t let your emotions dictate what you’re supposed to do and if you fail or stumble, dust yourself off and get back up. Ako nga hindi nagpatinag eh.”
The story of Mamshei Sheila is one that’s truly inspirational. In the face of adversity, she refused to be defined by her struggles. With unwavering determination and an indomitable spirit, she took each obstacle as an opportunity to grow stronger and wiser. Against all odds, she rose above her challenges, transforming her life into a testament of resilience and tenacity. Through grit and perseverance, she turned her dreams into reality, inspiring everyone around her to reach for the stars. Her journey reminds us that success is not about avoiding failures, but about embracing them as stepping stones to greatness. Today, she stands as a beacon of hope, proving that no matter the odds, with unwavering belief in oneself, the human spirit can soar to unimaginable
heights. Her story serves as a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is light waiting to be found, and with courage and perseverance, we can all script our own triumphs in the grand tale of life.
